Victorian Red Poll On Farm Challenge, 26 February - 3 March 2018.

The 2018 On Farm Challenge which is now underway.

All members and friends and members of the public are welcome to attend the judging at each property and the dinner.

AIMS

1. To promote and improve the Red Poll Breed to meet future market needs.
2. To provide assistance to breeders by communication with experts who can provide constructive comments about individual animals and/or herds.
3. To stimulate fellowship between members from different areas of Victoria
4. To showcase Red Polls in Victoria.

Classes

1. Female – 9-16 months
2. Female – over 16-24 months
3. Female – over 24 – 36 months
4. Female – over 3 – 5 years
5. Female – over 5 years
6. Bull – 9 – 16 months
7. Bull - over 16 – 24 months
8. Bull – over 24 months – 5 years
9. Bull - over 5 years
10. Two offspring of one sire up to 18 months.

Cattle are to be presented in paddock condition and yarded for inspection by the Judge.

A Presentation Luncheon is planned at the home of Ian and Nell Staff, Saturday 3rd March, 2018 commencing at 11 am. All members and friends and members of the public are welcome to attend the judging at each property and the dinner.

The Judge is Mr Alan Wilson.

Alan is the Principal of Oakwood Red Poll Cattle Stud in Brentwood on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, 212 Km west of Adelaide, with an annual rainfall of 15”. He commenced the stud with two cows in 1947 and now has a herd of 250 breeders both Stud and Commercial. He runs a cereal cropping and beef cattle operation with his son Peter. He has exhibited his Stud Cattle and Steers at The Royal Adelaide Show for 53 years and has won major Championships in both categories many times over the years as well as most successful Exhibitor of Cattle in the Show. In so doing, he has promoted the Red Poll Breed to other breeders including youngsters in Agricultural Schools. He has imported semen from the USA (Carl’s Beamin’ Boy and Hoosier Classic) to improve the Red Poll Breed in Australia. Semen from his Champion Oakwood bulls is valued all over Australia and in the UK, USA and South Africa. He has contributed to the Red Poll Administration by serving as President for two separate terms and is a Life Member of the Australian Red Poll Cattle Breeders Inc. In South Australia, he has been Chairman of the Beef Cattle Committee, the S.A. Beef Carcase Competition Committee, and the S.A. Beef Breeders Group.

He is an expert cattle judge, having been appointed as Judge in every major Royal Show in Australia, and was an invited Judge in 2011 at the Royal International Show in Suffolk, UK. He has also attended Red Poll International Congresses in the USA, UK, South America and New Zealand.
